The history of Château Ducru-Beaucaillou, as with many other Grands Crus in Bordeaux, dates back to the turn of the 17th to the 18th century. The Johnston family, renowned Bordeaux négociants, purchased Domaine Ducru-Ravez in 1866. They improved the facilities, building the Victorian pavilions still present today, expanded the cultivated hectares, and invested in new winemaking technologies. Today, it belongs to Jean-Eugène Boire. The vineyard is known as “des beaux cailloux,” due to its planting characteristics in an environment of pebbles and gravel, with about 50 hectares on rounded hilltops parallel to the Gironde River and surrounded by forests. This red wine is primarily made from Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by 10 to 15% Merlot depending on the vintage. The vines average 35 to 40 years old, planted on gravel, fermenting in cement vats and aged in French oak barrels, with more than 50% being new barrels, until bottling.
