Mont Rubí is a winery within the DO Penedès (Alt Penedès), located at the base of the old Cooperative building in the town of l’Avellà (dating back to the 18th century). With new ownership in the mid-80s of the last century, their wines gained fame through the work of recovering ancestral Catalan varieties, especially Sumoll. Durona Negre is a red wine made from 3 local varieties, 50% Sumoll, complemented by 25% Garnacha and 25% Cariñena. After a cold pre-maceration, it is vinified with gentle extractions using “pigeage” for over a month. The wine ages for one year in 300-liter French oak barrels and rests for 24 months in the bottle before being marketed. The vineyards of the 3 varieties were planted in the mid-1950s on clay-calcareous soils.
